Hyundai recalls in Canada
Theta II engines, ABS fires and the recalls owners are still discovering

Hyundai has issued some of the largest single recall campaigns in Canadian history — the February 2024 ABS-module recall alone covered about 349,000 vehicles, and engine campaigns between 2019 and 2022 covered hundreds of thousands more.

Many of the affected vehicles are 8–15 years old and on their second or third owner, who never received a letter. Transport Canada posts every campaign; almost nobody reads it.

The media and the government are inefficient in disseminating critical recall information to consumers. Often times it takes days or weeks before a major recall is announced by the media.

Consumers are asked to be proactive, but they are at the mercy of slow channels to receive important news. Some recalls aren't even mentioned anywhere except official channels.

Theta II and Nu engine recalls (2015–2022)

Connecting-rod bearing wear in four-cylinder Theta II and Nu engines could cause abnormal knocking, engine stalling, or oil leaks leading to engine seizure and fires. Hyundai and Kia reached a Canadian class-action settlement that extended engine warranties for eligible vehicles.

Major campaigns included the May 2022 Elantra GT, Tucson, Elantra and Sonata engine recall (about 178,000 vehicles), the September 2021 engine recall (about 153,000 vehicles), the January 2021 Tucson, Elantra and Sonata engine recall, the Veloster, Kona and Elantra engine recall (2021), the Santa Fe engine recall (2021), and the original 2016 Santa Fe engine recall.

ABS module fires: "park outside" (2020–2024)

Brake fluid leaking internally into the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module can cause an electrical short circuit over time. The short can ignite a fire in the engine compartment even when the ignition is switched off, prompting Transport Canada to advise owners to park outdoors and away from structures until the recall repair is completed.

Safety recalls include the massive February 2024 ABS recall — Veracruz, Tucson, Elantra, Genesis Coupe, Sonata, Veloster, Accent and more (about 349,000 vehicles), the September 2023 ABS recall (about 327,000 vehicles), the March 2023 ABS recall (about 296,000 vehicles), the Tucson ABS recall (2020, about 145,000 vehicles), and the Tucson and Santa Fe ABS recall (2022).

2026 so far

Recalls do not stop with older models. Recent campaigns include the Tucson instrument cluster recall (June 2026, about 27,000 vehicles) and the Kona and Kona EV seat recall (July 2026).

Transport Canada has logged 141 vehicle recalls covering about 1.2 million vehicles in Canada so far in 2026 — roughly one vehicle recall every 1.8 days.

What to do if your Hyundai is recalled

  1. Find your 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the driver-side dashboard, driver-side door jamb, or vehicle registration papers.
  2. Check the VIN on Transport Canada's recall database or Hyundai Canada's official VIN lookup tool.
  3. Recall repairs are free at any authorized Hyundai dealership, regardless of whether you bought the vehicle new, used, or from a third party.
  4. If the notice advises you to "park outside", keep the vehicle away from homes, garages, and other structures until the inspection and fuse/module replacement are performed.
